In my previous posts I've used the two key terms 'Mainstream' and 'Independent' but what is the real difference between the two? This post investigates that question.
Mainstream
Mainstream movies are those films that have been made with a huge sum of money to be advertised, promoted and made; they have a higher production value than independent films.
They are those films that people could recognise quickly - just by seeing it's masthead. They use well known actors to take part in their movies, posters, trailers, magazines and they promote/market globally - thus making their movie widely known.
As they have a larger budget to spend, their locations/mise-en-scene are more likely to be lavish than independent films.
Their film institutions are well known for other previous motion pictures, increasing their overall marketing technique. They target their films for the wider international audience.
Examples of mainstream films include; The hunger games, Titanic, Shrek, The Harry Potter series and Frozen.
Independent
Independent films as already previously mentioned above, have a lower production value than mainstream movies. These means that they have to think carefully on their marketing techniques, to avoid over spending. They target their films to a niche market. As they hire unknown actors/actresses to take part in their movie.
Film locations/mise-en-scene tend to include areas that have suffered business/economic decline, such as rural areas, far away from globalised cities such as London - as these areas are more 'unknown' and lacks opportunities that involve marketing their film in an international scale.
They tend to release/promote their films in film festivals.
