Magazine
After the mostly critical reviews I received, I decided to change/manipulate some of the magazine conventions I used - such as the masthead as it is an existing magazine name.To make my magazine more memorable and to make it more appealing to my target audience I made my own masthead called 'Motion Flikk'.
Motion Flikk is an name which I have come up with, from the two phrases 'Motion picture' and 'teen flick'; I combined Motion with the word Flick to make the masthead this is so that costumers/onlookers will get the hint that it is a film magazine, as both words are associated with the film industry. I decided to spell the word 'flick' as 'Flikk' to make the brand name more unique.
From 10 students aged 17-19 years, (5 from each gender) the top font that they seemed to like the most was the second one from the list.
The website that I have used to create this font is Dafont.com which offers users a diverse range of font designs to work on.
After doing a survey, I have decided to manipulate the design of this font to fit in more with my target audience and the magazines that I have already investigated/researched about, conventions. By doing this I will be able to produce a successful film marketed perfectly to the market aged 16 - 21 years old.
I noticed that film magazines often have eye catching, attention grabbing banners placed near their masthead. These banners often inform buyers of what information the magazine offers. For example Total Film has one main banner, seen displayed many times in their issues, this is "The modern guide to movies". This is shown below:
But at times Total film magazine also varies their banner, to connect with the whole movie franchise that they are displaying. This example is also shown below:
Like most film magazines, I decided to create my very own film magazine banner, which reads; 'The world's No.1 guide to movies'. Having this specific banner will encourage more people to purchase my magazine as they want the very best , top, hot from the press information on the newly released movies that have grabbed their attention; as my target audience are those individuals who want to know their movies inside out.
I made it (the banner) short and catchy, so that the magazine will be easily remembered for being the world's No.1.
Below are the developments which I have taken in order to reach the end masthead brand name design.
Trailer
I and my partner Mikaela Lawrence, decided that our trailer's/film's name should be 'unavoidable', as it hints a little of the storyline to our target audience, without giving too much away.
We felt that all the fonts listed below, related significantly to the film's story - to achieve an unbiased result I therefore decided to do survey - to determine which font design we should use.
And that explains how we reached the favoured vote for the font named 'Skratch Punk'.
This certain font corresponds well with the storyline as the 'cracks' on the letters symbolises Richard's personality breaking and changing.
However during my magazine first draft, feedback I was noted by Macaulee Cooper (one of my magazine critics) that one of the letters in 'unavoidable' was unclear; that explains why I manipulated the font design to make it more distinct.
The image below, undoubtedly explains the steps which I have executed to attain the ultimate film name, font design.
This was the colour of the font that I used on my second draft magazine. On this draft the font stood out well as the grey contrasted well with the darker colours.
I then tried to do this on my final draft - but the font blended more into the main image, as the picture below shows;
That is why I have then, decided to change the colour of the font to black. I felt that it made it more noticeable in the end.
